01. Saint James Neck Cushion.

Words

Last year we commissioned Brooklyn-based designer Shin Murayama to make a series of utilitarian items using iconic products from Levi's, Adidas, Filson, Vans, Champion, Dickies, Red Wing and Saint James. Subsequently staged and shot by photographer Jason Evans for an editorial that appeared in our eleventh issue, one of each repurposed piece is now available to buy from our online store.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

Current Exhibition

Alfred Maurer: Art on the Edge
October 10, 2015 – January 4, 2016

Words

Crystal Bridges is an American modern art museum located in the charming small town of Bentonville, Arkansas. The glass and wood space was designed by Boston-based architect Moshie Safdie and opened its doors to the public in 2011. The museum sits on 120 acres of Ozark forest: the flow of the space is great, surrounded by nature and lots of water and connected by three miles of trails that are used for walking, running and biking. Outdoor sculptures by Keith Haring, Paul Manship, Roxy Paine, Mark di Suvero and James Turrell are some of the must-see pieces. The permanent collection boasts a wide array of work from artists like Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Winslow Homer, Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Donald Judd. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bachman-Wilson House was fully relocated to Crystal Bridges and opens on November 11, 2015. Arkansas is considered a flyover state by many, but this world-class museum is changing that. After my recent visit I am happy to report it is well worth the trip.

With locations in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Portland, Self Edge has just opened its first shop outside the US, at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula in San José del Cabo. The interior is clean, bright and airy and the store's offering maintains the same commitment to high-quality, vintage-inspired products, with a bit more of a warm weather focus. Situated down a dirt road on a valley farm with a series of other retailers, it's a truly beautiful destination shop that's a little off the beaten path.

01. Hans Wegner swivel chair.

Words

I love poking around on 1stdibs. I’ve never purchased anything from the site, but it’s a great way to while away your time, inevitably seeing several outstanding pieces of furniture or design that you’ve never laid eyes on. Every so often I also discover a really good physical store that is operating as an online retailer via this high-end shopping portal. Open Air Modern, based in Brooklyn, is one such example, bowling me over recently with this incredible Hans Wegner swivel chair as well as many other rarities.

Words

The Line might be best considered a purveyor of beautiful things; from objects and clothing to homewares and digital content. And they have recently opened their second apartment atelier, following the success of the original New York enterprise. The new Melrose Place location is now open, and showcases the same pared back, refined and luxurious taste that gained the original concept store such a fine reputation in the first place.

01. The Ken Stadling Collection.

Words

To accompany a new exhibition of over 50 items from the Ken Stradling Collection curated by Margaret Howell, we are pleased to present a conversation between the collector and the designer. Shot on location in Bristol, the short film offers a glimpse into Stradling’s modern design archive, and sees the pair discuss not only the origins, but also the depth and breadth of his collection.

Made by regular Inventory contributor Rick Pushinsky, alongside Tim Bowditch, it captures the diversity of Stradling’s surroundings and touches upon the work of Marcel Breuer for Bristol furniture manufacturer Crofton Gane. A major component of the exhibition, these pieces will be complimented by a selection of studio pottery, glassware and everyday household objects. The show opens at Margaret Howell’s Wigmore Street store in London on Thursday October 15th, and runs until Saturday November 15th, 2015.

Isamu Noguchi Cyclone Table

01

Image

01. Produced by Knoll.

Words

While there are plenty of dining table options on the market, I find it an especially difficult item to commit to. It can really set the tone for a room, as well as your home overall. Glass, wood and marble all have their merits, but with a variety of bases and legs sometimes offered, the decision-making doesn't always end there. If you don't have any Eiffel chairs in the dining area, then there could be a spot for Noguchi's Cyclone Table. Originally produced in 1957 by Knoll, it has a slightly more casual appearance and serves a very utilitarian function.
