INVENTORY: 2009-2016

Words

After seven years, we’ve decided to stop publishing Inventory. We’re extremely grateful to everyone that has supported the magazine by advertising with us or selling it in their stores; to those of you that have purchased a copy; and to the people and brands that have helped to bring our pages to life over the course of thirteen issues.

Making this magazine has been such a valuable experience. The lessons learned, knowledge gained, and relationships cemented could never be replaced, and it’s a journey that I’ll remember forever. Due to the content and the people involved, it’s been a very personal project from the start, and I have to say the biggest thank you to my colleagues along the way. I want to acknowledge the pivotal work of Simon Roe from the beginning to the very end, as well as the roles played by Philip Watts and Owen Parrott, Stephen Mann and Anthony Hooper, Matthew Klassen and Chris Allen. Without your dedication Inventory would not have reached the same heights.

I look back on the legacy of what we’ve created with awe and pride, but the publishing landscape has shifted and it feels like the right time to move on, to conclude things with arguably our best issue, and pursue new challenges and opportunities.

Sincerely,
Ryan Willms

305 x 238mm
350 colour illustrations
Published by Phaidon, 2015

Words

With the sad passing of Ellsworth Kelly in December of last year, Phaidon's completion of this definitive monograph, covering the artist's entire career from the 1940s onwards, could not have been more well-timed. The 368-page hardcover book features all of his major works from early drawings to public sculptures, alongside texts by Robert Storr, Gavin Delahunty and Richard Shiff which help to illuminate things even further.

Ten Years of Margaret Howell and Eric Gill

Words

StudioSmall's work with Margaret Howell is some of the design agency's most successful, achieving a consistently beautiful balance between the client's vision and their own principles – irrespective of the medium or brief. Looking at this output overall, it's the printed invitations that often stand out, and a range of them are assembled here. The 36-page commemorative publication explores the evolution of a decade-long relationship grounded in the Gill Sans typeface, alongside a contextualising essay from Eye magazine editor and co-owner John L. Walters.

Richard Tuttle and Agnes Martin: Religion of Love

Info

Hardback
36 pages, 9.5 x 8 inches
1 colour, 14 B&W illustrations
Published by Walther König, 2016

Words

"Because Religion of Love (written in 1990s) is so late in coming out, we hope it worth the wait. As representative of one of the most important artist’s late thinking; on the one hand, it reconfirms her most classical thought (Beauty is the mystery of life), and, on the other, adds new thought with an urgency only found in a mature artist of her age and persuasion. One of the most rigorous of sensibilities, we do not know what she meant by uncharacteristically asking another artist, Richard Tuttle, to illustrate her text, for she, unlike he, had a clear understanding of the meaning of illustration. Knowing that, he took it up as much to fathom a friend’s genius after their passing, as well as the chance to say goodbye, life did not include, yet made available in publication. Hopefully, the reader can enjoy these various levels of interaction as art." Richard Tuttle, London, September 2014.

Gerhard Richter: Atlas, in Four Volumes

Info

Slip, hardcover
828 pages, 14 x 18 inches
Edition of 1500
Published by Walther König, 2015

Words

"More than 50 years ago, Gerhard Richter began mounting parts of his extensive collection of pictorial material on cardboard, hoping to create order and clarity among his archive of photos, newspaper clippings, sketches, drawings, construction plans, room design, collages, overpainted photographs and drafts of paintings. Richter eschewed chronology – his real interest was in iconographical and typological order. A work in progress, this Atlas soon developed into an independent Gesamtkunstwerk mirroring biographical and historical facts – an artistic cosmos of great autonomy, a source of all of his thought and creation. The artist's book has become an important genre for Richter, and in this large-format, four-volume edition, he has not only reproduced Atlas, but rearranged it. His decision to show all of his plates at a scale of 1:2 makes the monumental archive – with more than 5,000 images – visible in all its details for the first time. Richter himself has redefined the colour of his plates, piece by piece, through several correction phases, rendering this epic work accessible in a stunning new publication."

Carl Andre by Diane Waldman

Info

Softcover, 82 pages
44 artworks
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1970

Words

I’m a little surprised that this original Carl Andre catalogue, which was uploaded to the Book/Shop website in early November, is still available. Relating to an exhibition at the Guggenheim that ran from September 29th to November 22th, 1970, this volume features 44 of the artist’s works, as well as an essay by the curator Diane Waldman. If that sounds at all interesting, grab this copy before it’s removed from the shop on January 5th.
