Reference Material: 2nd Magazine

Words

With an increasing number of great Japanese magazines covering the menswear market, it can be difficult to pick which ones to buy. Not being able to read them quickly puts the emphasis on product curation, photographs and art direction. For me, HUGE has been a favorite for a little while, and of course Free & Easy has made a fair few good issues over the years. Another title that's been consistently impressing us lately is 2nd, so we decided to pick up a few issues for the Stockroom. The most recent issue, the previous one and the Red Wing special edition are now available in-store and online.

Wtaps, Tet & Grind

Words

The fall collection from Wtaps has recently debuted online. The brand itself is one of my favorites from Japan because of the way it balances traditional techniques and reference points with new ideas. For me, it's also the best brand around when it comes to effective exterior branding, which is no easy feat. These images from the latest issue of Grind magazine feature Tet in a series of looks from the new collection. The black and white shots have a great mood and provide an interesting look at the clothing worn effortlessly by the brand's designer and creative director.

Nigel Cabourn by Matt Hind

Words

Simon told me about Men's File ahead of issue one's release, but I hadn't seen a copy in the flesh until recently. That issue was the 3rd and it features a great Nigel Cabourn editorial photographed by Matt Hind. The shoot in the Alps blew me away. The photographs are beautiful and the clothes, which took quite a beating, look amazing. It's undoubtedly the highlight of the issue and it made me even more excited for the arrival Nigel's fall collection. If you're a Cabourn fan, I recommend picking up the issue for the editorial alone, which is also accompanied by a small article.

Words

Albam has been one of the biggest supporters and sellers of our magazine and it's been great to work with the company over the last year. While they've helped spread our product, they have grown at a tremendous rate themselves over the last 12 months. Since I met James and the crew last summer, they've added two more shops and a number of new products. On my recent visit to London I was able to see the Spitalfields shop and quite liked the new space. I would have to say it's my favorite Albam shop of the three locations and it was nice to see the increasingly nice selection of print alongside the increasingly good offering of soft goods.

Arkitip x CSC

Words

Although the World Cup came to a partially sad close over the weekend, I just got my hands on the latest issue of Arkitip. In collaboration with Adidas and Chinatown Soccer Club, they've produced a dedicated football issue which includes artwork, photography, interviews and some background on the CSC. It comes with a fan scarf made for the downtown New York club and I have to say the project turned out great all around. It was even nice to see a little Inventory page in the back of the issue. Thanks for including us and congrats on another great issue.

In Stock: Les Cahiers Purple

01

Details

—01. Issue Number 1, 2010.

Words

I first heard about Les Cahiers Purple through Simon a few months ago, and since then I've been trying to locate a copy for myself. The collection of short articles, stories, illustrations and photographs put together by the folks behind Purple magazine is another lovely little print gem. Well, maybe not so little. It's nearly 300 pages long, printed on an off-white/grey stock with all black and white photography. It comes in English and French, and we were lucky enough to find some of the last copies of issue Number 1 in English.

Front Lines

01

Details

—01. "Front Lines, inspired by Capa's indelible scenes from the first 'media war', reminds us that the camaraderie of men drawn by a sense of duty to an imperfect moral calling can reveal fleeting moments of disarming grace bound by unspeakable tragedy."

Words

The photographs were originally shot for the CONTACT photography festival in Toronto but our own Chris Allen decided to take the opportunity to print a selection of the images in the first publication from Ikigai Editions. The news print release is 36 pages long, has 3 different cover options and was printed in Canada. The photographs were shot by Brendan Meadows, Simon Willms and George Moreira, and the styling and vintage archive came courtesy of Matt Robinson, owner of Klaxon Howl in Toronto. To accompany the project, Darrin Klimek also produced a short film offering a behind-the-scenes look at casual life behind the front lines of battle. Overall, the project was beautifully executed from the photos to the film to the first offering from Ikigai Editions, and we are very pleased to be offering the publication in our shop.

Words

It’s been a very compact and exciting spring so far this year as we have new developments in all aspects of Inventory, but our main focus has been the production of our second issue of the magazine. Finally our Spring–Summer 2010 issue is going to the printers and we are excited to present the two covers for the upcoming offering. We feel the new issue not only met the standard of our initial launch but perhaps exceeded it with a more diverse range of content, some great new contributors and an additional 30 pages. Featured in our spring issue are Margaret Howell, The Real McCoy’s, Beams, White Mountaineering, Our Legacy, Wm. J. Mills & Co., Unis, New Balance and several other fascinating people, brands and stories. The issue will be available to pre-order through the Inventory Stockroom next week and will be shipping and hitting shelves in early/mid-May.
