Scout, based in Seattle, have expanded on their offering since first launching in the spring of 2012. Along with a range of their own products, they've put together a focused selection of vintage 20th century pieces. The eight items, grouped together in the Reissue section of their website, provide inspiration, character and charm in the way that only vintage garments can.

Paul McCobb Fiberglass Chairs

01

Image

—01. Designed for St. John Seating Co., NY.

Words

Affectionately referred to as the 'Origami Chair' because of its folded appearance, this design by Paul McCobb is my favourite of the many mid-century fiberglass options. The Charles and Ray Eames 'Shell Chair' might be more recognizable but it's become quite ubiquitous, with knock-offs and copies running rampant. The faceted angles of McCobb's design, however, really stand out and it is a rare gem that proves much more elusive.

Modern Fifty is a fantastic resource if your sole focus is 20th century antiques leaning towards the more industrial side of the spectrum. The shop is located just outside Washington, DC but its website provides great inspiration, with a wide range of product shots for their hundreds of items.

Words

When it comes to artwork at home, I am often drawn to event and exhibition posters. These two were created for different Cy Twombly shows in Europe and form part of a great selection of printed items offered by Tokyo-based interiors store, Building.

Brown's Beach Regular Neck Vest

01

Image

—01. Made in Japan.

Words

Made from 73% wool and 27% cotton and woven into a distinctive double-faced single layer, Brown's Beach fabric is an incredibly warm insulating material dating back to 1901. Historic pieces fetch a handsome price on the vintage market, but current reproductions, produced under the original trademark, are very well-made and like early examples in every way.

Corning US Navy Handleless Watch Mugs

01

Images

—01. Made in Corning, NY.
—02. Hand warmers.

Words

I stumbled across these beautiful pieces of, both, glassware and naval history recently. Produced by Corning during WWII for the US Navy, this handleless mug was used as a hand warmer by sailors on watch duty. There are many fine examples turning up, at any given time, on eBay.

Words

Bermuda Trips is the name of a new webstore launched by Dean Edmonds and Natsumi Sashida. The intention here is simple: to offer a range of affordable and interesting small products and travel finds, both new and old, that have each spoken to Dean and Natsumi in some way. At Bermuda Trips one-of-a kind Crazy Rugby Shirts find a home alongside vintage bumper stickers, various homewares, military miscellany and prototypes of Dean's own furniture, design and sculptural works. With no set schedule, keep an eye on the site for regular additions and updates in the weeks and months ahead.
