Ellsworth Kelly Monograph by Phaidon

Info

Hardcover, 368 pages
305 x 238mm
350 colour illustrations
Published by Phaidon, 2015

Words

With the sad passing of Ellsworth Kelly in December of last year, Phaidon's completion of this definitive monograph, covering the artist's entire career from the 1940s onwards, could not have been more well-timed. The 368-page hardcover book features all of his major works from early drawings to public sculptures, alongside texts by Robert Storr, Gavin Delahunty and Richard Shiff which help to illuminate things even further.

Stone Island Nylon Camp Cap

01

Image

01. Made in Italy.

Words

While Stone Island make more impressive pieces than this camp cap, it's sometimes the simple things that stand out. Combining versatility, a good fabric choice and some nice branding, it's hard to say anything bad about it – or too much more.

NikeLab Air Force 1 Low

01

Image

01. Premium leather upper and liner.

Words

I'd be curious to know how many versions of the Air Force 1 have been released by Nike since 1982. Over the years, the brand has attempted many times to elevate the icon with premium materials while maintaining its original aesthetic, and more often than not it hasn't been a total success. The recent NikeLab release, however, is very, very good. There are low and mid options in white, black, navy and red, all featuring deluxe uppers and Phylon cushioning. The only detail I might reconsider is the clear sole but as it's out of sight, it's easy to overlook.

Drawing Then: Innovation and Influence in American Drawings of the Sixties

Info

Dominique Lévy
909 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10021
January 27 – March 19, 2016

Words

Dominique Lévy in New York is currently showing a selection of drawings from some of my favourite artists. Curated by Kate Ganz, the exhibition features a variety of works by the likes of Agnes Martin, Brice Marden, Sol LeWitt, Richard Tuttle, Ellsworth Kelly and Josef Albers, among others. Looking at the evolution of drawing and the development of some of America's most prolific minimalists during an important time in the country's history, the show's tone is calm and mature, highlighting the power and impact their seemingly simple compositions.

Esherick to Nakashima

Info

Modernism Museum Mount Dora
145 E. Fourth Avenue
Mount Dora, Florida 32757
Open through late 2016

Words

"The 76 pieces on view at Florida's Modernism Museum Mount Dora prove, yet again, why the American Studio Movement master is unrivaled for his sensitive handling of his chosen material." This in-depth look at George Nakashima features the woodworker's pieces alongside those of Wharton Esherick, continuing the "intellectual thread" of the gallery's inaugural exhibition, From Wharton to Wendell, which juxtaposed the work of Esherick and Wendell Castle.

NikeLab Roshe Daybreak x Fragment

01

Image

01. Lightweight nylon and synthetic upper.

Words

I was never really a fan of Nike's Roshe Run model, which has taken over the streets in the past few years, but the recent Roshe LD-1000 and now the Roshe Daybreak have upped the ante. This classic colourway, produced in collaboration with Fragment Design, is tough to fault, while the waffle-inspired outsole, full-length Phylon midsole, and Ortholite sock liner combine for an extremely comfortable ride.

Archy Marshall – A New Place 2 Drown

01

Image

01. Available to buy or stream.

Words

The latest release from Archy Marshall – previously known as King Krule and before that, Zoo Kid – is his most mature. A nicely packaged album, book and short film provide an insightful look into the artist's life and creative process. The music itself is his best work to date; a slight departure from past records, it sees Marshall experimenting more with instrumentals, which demonstrate a notable evolution in his production abilities. Overall there's a less traditional structure, allowing the London-based musician to create an intimate and sometimes darker atmosphere.

Words

A handful of Spring-Summer '16 items have begun to populate the Totokaelo online store, including the first delivery from Margiela. This camel coloured jacket is certainly a standout, made in Italy from calf suede, with minimal pockets and extended cuffs.
