Sassafras Wool Ball Cap

01

Images

—01. 100% Wool.
—02. Made in the USA.

Words

Sassafras haven't shown us too many collaborations or accessories but this wool ball cap is great. The almost ratty looking lettering offers a nice reference to the Giants while also representing the brand's initials. It's made by Cooperstown Ball Cap Co. in the USA and is a nice alternative to something by Ebbets Field Flannels.

Preview: Mismo Ruck sack

01

Images

—01. Available in olive and navy canvas.

Words

Mismo might not be known for their back packs but it seems more and more luggage collections are trying their hand at the rugged looking ruck sack. Mismo presented their version recently which will be available in their SS11 collection next year. The clean design and high quality materials are no surprise. The interesting hardware and subtle design features make it a definite standout, but you'll have to wait a few months to check them out.

South2 West8 Camp Packs

01

Images

—01. Red.
—02. Blue.

Words

While some of the South 2 West 8 garments don't seem to fit us westerners too well, it's hard to go wrong with their bags. Almost all of them are made in the USA where it seems some of the best backpacks are coming from - barring Seil Marschall. They're a good size, have a nice selection of pockets, and the colours and small leather accents are about as classic as can be.

Chester Wallace Canvas Bags

01

Images

—01. Black canvas.
—02. Natural canvas.

Words

This small brand from Portland, Oregon is run by Patrick Long, who named the brand after his grandfather. The canvas bags are simple, useful and nicely designed. I'm usually more into plain bags with less colorful details but I can imagine these bags being very well received. Using vintage canvas, the bags are made in the USA, and with prices ranging from $98-132, the value seems to be pretty solid as well.

Vintage REI Day Pack

—01. Blue sky and mountains.
—02. Worn down path.
—03. REI bag, found on eBay.

Words

Recently a reader sent me an image of a favorite bag of his. Instead of just passing along the image of the vintage REI pack, he included these two landscape photographs as well. Something about it just made sense and the colors and mood just fit perfectly. I've been hunting on eBay for old Kelty and REI bags over the past few months although I've yet to pull the trigger. There is something about the metal frame hiking bags that just looks great, although this small day pack is a bit more useful for regular use.

Woolrich Woolen Mills Explorer Hat

01

Images

—01. Explorer Hat, with exterior pocket.
—02. Close up view.

Words

The bucket hat by Woolen Mills is one of the best out there. The shape and size make it easy to wear and they always offer a great variety of fabrics and colours. One of the more interesting versions this spring had slipped under my radar until the recent update by Tres Bien. The floral pattern is subtle enough to wear, and colourful enough to be ideal for the summer.

Makr Farm Tote

01

—02. The details

Words

When it comes to bags, it's tough to beat canvas and leather. And when it comes to totes, it's tough to beat Makr's Farm Bag. The simple, clean design is pretty much perfect and black canvas is often hard to come by. It looks fantastic with the tan coloured horse leather as well. As with most Makr products, the bag is well crafted in just a small run of 30.

Nitty Gritty Socks

01

Images

—01. Red light rib stripes
—02. Cashmere cable knit in light blue
—03. Cream and blue block rib

Words

Warm weather generally means no socks for me, although it's nice to add a little bit of colour where you can and socks are a subtle & somewhat unexpected way to do so. Nitty Gritty have a number of great in-house options available which they've produced in association with Italian company Bresciani. They come in a variety of nice patterns, colours and materials that range from a great light blue cashmere cable knit, to a vibrant red striped rib cotton version. Both of which would look good between some Authentics and some khaki chinos perhaps. Some would say they're expensive for a pair of socks, but well made, proper fitting hosiery is one of the most underrated things there is.
