Wolfgang Tillmans – The Cars

Info

Softcover, 128 pages
6.5 x 9.5 inches
First edition
Published by Walther König, 2015

Words

"I wanted to show how cars appear in typical street view, which is rarely the subject of photographs. Cars are usually avoided in photography - one waits until a car has exited a view. The ordinary presence of cars is rarely worthy of representation. It's always the special car, or the extreme traffic jam or, of course, the exciting crash that is being pictured. The Cars pays tribute to the shapes and forms we look at every day. How much time we spend with them, sitting inside them, the endless hours we stare at a dashboard. Even if we don't own a car ourselves, their presence is unavoidable. Cars are everywhere. Their sheer number is the most crazy thing about them. They appear in our lives with excessive omnipresence. In their volume cars intrude upon public space, and the way they occupy streets and open areas is rarely challenged. Virtually wherever there are people, there are cars and they are visually intermingling in whatever we see. We are looking at the world from a car and cars are in the foreground, the background or in between of what is in our view. Where they are, they add a tone, a note, a presence, a noise to the setting they're in." – Wolfgang Tillmans

Although he's issued two RRL titles and one about Marilyn Monroe, most of the publications that Tom Adler produces focus on iconic imagery from the annals of surf and climbing culture. To coincide with the recent release of An Uncommon Archive, a new volume from T. Adler Books that "draws from the seemingly disparate worlds of surfing, fashion and style, fishing, music, fine art, rock climbing, travel and adventure," T Magazine caught up with Tom at his Padaro Lane home near Carpinteria, California.

Many people associate technical fabrics with specific forms of exercise or poor weather conditions, but functional clothing is equally relevant to the requirements of daily life as temperatures rise, particularly in a city environment. When it comes to the latter and the countless considerations involved, few brands succeed in the way that Arc'teryx Veilance does. This season's collection, captured on the streets of New York for our latest online feature, combines innovation and wearability with a well-balanced colour palette.

Boo-Hooray and Gavin Brown's Enterprise present A Living Collage

Info

Gavin Brown's Enterprise
291 Grand Street
New York, NY 10002
July 8 – July 31, 2015

Words

While last weekend saw the final show at Gavin Brown's downtown, West Side space (he's moving the Enterprise to a former Brewery in Harlem, close to where he lives) this week saw the opening of one of the best exhibitions I've seen in a while, at his East Side project space in Chinatown. A Living Collage: The Living Theatre, Judith Malina and Julian Beck 1947-2015 opened on Wednesday evening, and gave a glimpse into the paper-based world of the legendary American experimental theatre company through flyers, posters, programs and prints. Many of these same pieces are offered for sale, or in the case of some of the smaller items: for free, or whatever donation you felt inclined to make. All this gave an unprecedented look into the history of New York theatre, music and arts through the decades and eyes of two of the city's pioneers and patrons in these fields. The fact that you could take some of that home with you was simply mind-blowing. Not to be missed.
