Agnes Martin Monograph

Info

Hardcover, 272 pages
8.25 x 10.5 inches
Published by D.A.P./Tate, 2015

Words

Agnes Martin seems to be having a well-deserved moment in the sun with a retrospective at the Tate Modern, which runs until October 11th before heading to Dusseldorf, Los Angeles and New York. To coincide with the exhibition, the renowned London-based art museum has released a definitive monograph, featuring early works, Martin's striped and gridded paintings, and a series of her final pieces. The publication also includes a selection of drawings, watercolours and critical essays, creating a wonderful overview of one of 20th century art’s most enduring icons, as well as a testament to a strong female figure who made a name for herself in the veritable boy’s club of minimalism.

Brice Marden – Notebook Sept. 1964-Sept. 1967

Info

Hardcover, 130 pages
7.5 x 4.5 inches
Published by Karma, 2015

Words

A glimpse into an artist’s notebook is about as close as we can get to witnessing the origins of a finished piece, offering an intimate level of access that is not often afforded to the public. Karma has released just such a curio devoted to Brice Marden’s art during a three-year period: September 1964 to September 1967. In some ways it functions as an autobiography of process; designed to resemble an actual notebook, it includes photos, postcards and handwritten notes which provide a personal insight into how his work came together at the time.

Arcana: Books on the Arts

Words

Arcana: Books on the Arts is a great store located on Washington Boulevard in Culver City, California. Since 1984 they have offered a wide range of new, rare and out of print books on 20th and 21st century photography, art, architecture, cinema, design, and fashion. I have never left the store empty-handed. During one visit I was chatting with an employee about a long out of print magazine that I was looking for. He told me to hold on while he ran across the street to their storage facility (they have over 100,000 items on hand) and returned with a pristine copy that I quickly added to my purchase pile. They recently launched a beautiful new website designed by Art Design Office. The site has a modern feel, which compliments the psychical location well. Now you can shop 24 hours a day without having to be in the Los Angeles area.

Deviate From Balance by John Wiese

Info

Softcover, perfect bound
64 pages, 6.5 x 9 inches
Edition of 500

Words

John Wiese is probably most recognized in music circles for his participation and collaboration with Sissy Spacek, Wolf Eyes and Sunn O))), as well as releasing records under his own name. He's by no means given this up, but a lot of his present endeavours revolve around sound installation, video, collage, photography, typography and graphic sound scores. On top of this array of activities, Wiese is the co-founder of Hesse Press, the small publishing house that issued this monograph. Deviate From Balance catalogues his latest art practices in a beautifully designed edition of 500. It should also be noted that to coincide with the book's release, Gilgongo Records put out a companion album of the same title which would give you a complete picture of Wiese’s multitalented explorations.

Grafted: Plants by Kohei Oda | Pots by Adam Silverman

Info

Hardcover
160 pages, 8 x 10 inches
Published by August Editions, 2015

Words

Kohei Oda, the owner of the Qusamura plant shop in Hiroshima, and the LA-based potter, Adam Silverman, have now presented two installations of their collaborative art project, A Tale of Plant & Pot. The parameters were quite simple: Oda created 100 grafted cactuses that meld two distinct specimens which come to resemble far-off alien lifeforms, and Silverman produced the slightly more restrained but still entirely unique and complementary receptacles they dwell in. A book, aptly titled Grafted, has been put together to chronicle these events and does so beautifully, with all of the plants and pots being photographed by Shuji Yoshida and Joshua White to form an interesting document of an equally fascinating cross-cultural collaboration.

Info

23 x 30cm
Softcover, unbound
Published by Goliga Books, 2014

Words

I've been especially interested in collage lately, so it was good to come across this book by Takashi Homma. It features a series of the photographer's prints, which he cut up as part of a two-day event in Tokyo and gave to participants to rearrange. He then photographed the results, some of which can be seen in this publication.
